Xiaomi refreshes its popular SU7 electric vehicle

The SU7, Xiaomi's first electric vehicle, took the Chinese market by storm last year. Xiaomi opened pre-orders for an upgraded model with longer range on Wednesday, with a starting price of $33,000, which remains cheaper than the Tesla Model 3.

After the SU7 was launched in March 2024, Xiaomi’s flagship electric sedan quickly became one of the most popular electric vehicles in China. In just nine months, the model garnered nearly 250,000 pre-orders, and by the end of 2024, Xiaomi had delivered more than 135,000 models. Since its launch, Xiaomi has sold more than 360,000 SU7s in just 21 months, averaging over 17,000 per month.

Despite a strong first half of 2025, sales have slowed since August, with the Tesla Model 3 surpassing it in sales in China in September and November.

A significant part of the slowdown came after Xiaomi launched the YU7, its first electric SUV, last June, shifting production capacity to increase production of the YU7. In addition, Xiaomi faced backlash after a series of incidents last year that sparked widespread criticism of the electric sedan's safety.

That's why Xiaomi prioritized safety in the upgraded SU7. Pre-orders for the new model opened on Wednesday, with a starting price of $33,000. While that's slightly higher than the current starting price of $31,000, the upgraded model is still cheaper than the Tesla Model 3 in China, which has a CLTC range of 634 km.

The new SU7 is available in three versions: Standard, Pro and Max, offering a CLTC range of up to 902 km. Xiaomi's current model offers a CLTC range of up to 830 km. Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, said the SU7 was the best-selling electric sedan priced above $28,600 in China, according to data from Chinese news outlet Auto Home.

The upgraded model now includes LiDAR as standard, as Xiaomi emphasizes safety as “the foundation and prerequisite.” Xiaomi delivered more than 410,000 electric vehicles last year and aims to sell about 550,000 electric vehicles in 2026. The upgraded SU7 is expected to be released in April.
