Tesla recalls 10% of Cybertrucks due to faulty adhesive

Tesla is recalling 6,197 Cybertrucks with the ' Off Road Lightbar ' accessory due to improper use of adhesives, which could cause the accessory to come off during operation of the vehicle. This represents approximately 10% of the 63,619 Cybertrucks in existence, a number confirmed by a previous recall that was resolved with a software update.

The Cybertruck has been promoted as an off-road capable vehicle, featuring off-road-specific features and various accessories for adventurous owners. One of these accessories is a wide light bar mounted above the truck's windshield, designed to enhance visibility of the terrain ahead.

This light bar does not come standard on every truck and is not available for purchase through Tesla’s online store. It can only be installed through Tesla’s service network, requiring a service request for installation. Despite its limited availability, it appears that a significant number of Cybertruck owners have opted for this upgrade, as indicated by the recall affecting nearly 10% of existing Cybertrucks.

The light bar recall is more complex than the previous headlight recall, which was resolved via a software update. The light bar issue stems from adhesives that may have been applied incorrectly, resulting in a weak bond to the vehicle’s surface. Tesla has updated its service instructions multiple times in an attempt to address the issue, but these measures have not been sufficient.

Tesla has reported 619 warranty claims related to this adhesive issue and has received one field report of the adhesive failure, though there have been no known crashes or injuries associated with the issue. However, a detached light bar could pose a traffic hazard, necessitating the recall.

To remedy the situation, Tesla will inspect the installed light bars on the affected Cybertrucks. If any light bars show signs of poor welding, they will be replaced with a new one secured with tape and a "positive mechanical connection," such as a screw.

Cybertruck owners with a light bar should schedule a service appointment for an inspection. Signs of potential problems include noise detected from inside the cabin, a loose feel to the touch, or a visible gap between the light bar and the windshield. If any of these signs are present, it is recommended to schedule a service appointment immediately.

The previous headlight recall was not initially reported due to its minor nature and resolution via a software update. However, the current light bar recall is more serious, requiring a physical repair, and therefore deserves attention.
