Tesla and India: A flirtation that matured slowly

Tesla has been closely monitoring the Indian market for some time, looking for the "right time" to enter a country with rapidly growing interest in electric mobility, but with significant trade and regulatory barriers.

Elon Musk himself had contacts with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2024, to strengthen technological cooperation. At the same time, senior Tesla executives reiterated that entering India requires a cautious approach , mainly due to the unique regulatory and tax environment.

No factory (for now) – Sales through imports

Tesla does not have a manufacturing facility in India, although the Indian government is actively promoting local EV manufacturing , offering reduced tariffs (15% instead of 70%) to companies that invest at least $500 million in factories in the country. However, Tesla has been reluctant to commit to such facilities so far

According to statements by India's Minister of Heavy Industries, HD Kumaraswamy, Tesla has made it clear that it is not interested (for now) in local production, which means that the vehicles will be imported from the company's factories in Shanghai and Berlin - with all the duties imposed.

Competition and challenges in the Indian EV market

Tesla is called upon to compete with tough players, such as China's BYD - which already has a presence in India - and local Tata Motors, which is steadily investing in the electric vehicle sector with significant advantages in terms of price and familiarity with local needs.

In addition, the policy of high import tariffs complicates Tesla's strategy of offering "affordable" models. Until local production is in place, pricing will remain an obstacle to widespread acceptance of the models by the country's middle class.

Hiring staff and expanding to other cities

Despite the cautious stance on factory construction, Tesla is investing in workforce India's. Job openings have already been posted on LinkedIn for:

  • Sales consultants and showroom staff
  • Service technicians
  • Vehicle operators for Autopilot data collection
  • Security experts

The ads are also expanding to the capital New Delhi, sparking speculation about a possible second showroom, although there has been no official confirmation at this time.

Tesla's technological footprint in India

India is a strategic market for Tesla not only because of its population and rapidly growing interest in electric mobility, but also because it can offer access to talent software engineering, which is essential for developing applications such as Autopilot, Full Self-Driving and the energy solutions .

Tesla's entry into India is not just a commercial move – it is a strategic challenge for the American company. Although the first steps are hesitant and limited to sales through imports, the interest is clear. Whether India becomes Tesla's next "factory hotspot" or remains just a consumer market will depend on tax regulations, price competitiveness and – ultimately – on Elon Musk's decision to "play ball" locally.
