Three leading technology companies, OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, have announced that they will create a new company, Stargate, to develop artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the United States (something that President Donald Trump also supports).
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son , and Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison appeared at the White House with President Donald Trump to announce the new project, which Trump called the "largest AI infrastructure project in history."
The companies will invest $100 billion initially, with plans to allocate up to $500 billion in the coming years. The project is expected to create 100,000 jobs in the US.

Donald Trump said Stargate will create “the physical and virtual infrastructure to power the next generation of AI,” including data centers across the country. The group’s first data project, a 1 million-square-foot facility, is already under construction in Texas.
For months now, it has become clear that more data centers – as well as chips and electricity and water resources for their operation – are needed to boost AI projects.
"I think this is going to be the most important project of this era," Altman said Tuesday. "We couldn't do this without you, Mr. President," he said, addressing Donald Trump.
The three companies behind the Stargate Project are well-suited for such a project. OpenAI is one of the major players in the artificial intelligence industry , and Oracle is one of the largest data center operators in the US. Finally, SoftBank can finance the expansion of the AI infrastructure, which is expected to cost billions of dollars.

Altman has previously urged U.S. officials to help build infrastructure to ensure the United States stays ahead of China in the AI industry. The OpenAI CEO also reportedly met with the Softbank CEO last year to solicit investment in new semiconductor facilities to manufacture AI chips.
"Infrastructure in the United States is extremely important, artificial intelligence is a little different than other kinds of software in that it requires enormous amounts of infrastructure, power, computer chips, data centers. We need to build it here and we need to be able to have the best AI infrastructure in the world," Altman had said in an interview.
Oracle said the Stargate project "will ensure American leadership in artificial intelligence, create hundreds of thousands of jobs , and bring enormous economic benefits to the entire world. This project will not only support the reindustrialization of the United States, but will also provide a strategic capability to protect the national security of America and its allies."
Finally, SoftBank will have financial responsibility for Stargate (while OpenAI will have operational responsibility). A fourth partner, MGX, is also contributing to the funding.
