The “Badbox” malware is far from gone and has now been found to infect Android-based Smart TVs, as well as Android TV boxes, smartphones, car entertainment systems, and more.

Last year, security researchers discovered that over 20 million open-source Android-based TV boxes were infected with the Badbox malware.
There have been efforts to disrupt the botnet. For example, the German government got involved in combating the Badbox malware that was pre-installed on 30,000 devices in Germany. Unfortunately, it remains a game of cat and mouse as a new variant of Badbox has been uncovered by security researchers at Bitsight.
Expanding beyond Android TV boxes and mobile devices, the new Badbox malware now targets Android-based Smart TVs. These are not official Android TV or Google TV devices, but devices built on Android Open Source (AOSP).

The countries most affected are Russia, China, India, Belarus, Brazil and Ukraine.

The new variant of the Badbox malware exploits devices for “home mediation, remote code installation, account abuse, and ad fraud,” according to security researchers. Most worryingly, the new code can be remotely loaded onto devices without the user’s knowledge. More details are available in Bitsight’s report here.
Google responded to the new findings by saying that open-source Android devices are not protected by its certification and security measures.

Malware refers to any program or code designed to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorized access to computer systems. It includes various forms such as viruses, worms, ransomware, spyware, and adware, each with a unique method of attack. Malware is often distributed through phishing emails, infected websites, or compromised software downloads. Protection against malware requires strong security measures, such as antivirus software, regular updates, and careful online behavior to avoid potential breaches.
