The HDMI Forum, responsible for the HDMI standard, announced that on January 6th it will present a new version of the specification.
This version will introduce "a wide range of higher resolutions and increased refresh rates," paving the way for even more immersive visual experiences.

The new features will be "supported with a new cable," according to the HDMI Forum's email to The Verge announcing the interview.
The specification will likely be HDMI 2.2, as VideoCardz notes. The Forum email also hints at this, noting that the HDMI Licensing Administrator, represented by two of the event's scheduled speakers, has been designated "to license Version 2.2 of the HDMI specification.".

HDMI 2.1, which has only received letter revisions since its introduction in 2017, supports 48Gbps bandwidth, refresh rates up to 120Hz with variable, and resolutions up to 10240 x 4320. VideoCardz speculates that the updated spec could allow for higher resolutions and frame rates without the need for Display Stream Compression.
Whatever the new features, the mention of the new cable is a reminder that, as with USB-C, not all HDMI cables are the same.

It seems unlikely that the HDMI Forum will change the port itself, so you'll likely be able to use your old cables with the new specification, and some may support its higher bandwidth. However, there's always the chance that you'll need new cables to take advantage of all the new features when that time comes.
