Major French newspapers, including Le Monde, Le Figaro and Le Parisien , said on Tuesday they were taking legal action against social media platform X, for allegedly using their content without payment

The newspapers said they should be paid under their ancillary rights, which allow payment to news agencies through digital platforms for distributing their content.
They said Platform X, formerly known as Twitter, never agreed to enter into negotiations with the French newspapers, unlike Alphabet Inc and Meta Platforms Inc.

They also said that X, which is owned by billionaire Elon Musk, failed to comply with an order issued by the Paris Court in May to disclose information needed to calculate the amount owed.
"The revenue from these rights, with the investment it would allow beneficiaries to make, reinforces the pluralism, independence and quality of the media, which are essential for freedom of expression and the right to information in our democratic society," the French newspapers said in a statement.
A spokesman for the Paris court confirmed the case and said the hearing was scheduled for May 15, 2025.
