Microsoft previews the unified .NET API for artificial intelligence (AI) and delivers the .NET 9 release candidate
It also released a release candidate for .NET 9.0, which will be available in November. The Microsoft.Extensions.AI library provides a layer of abstractions to facilitate interaction with AI services, allowing library creators to implement these “abstractions” so that developers can access a standard API. At the same time, developers will be able to use specific APIs when needed.

Microsoft provides reference implementations for OpenAI, Azure AI inference, and Ollama, but some developers have expressed concerns about the library's compatibility with other libraries, such as Azure OpenAI for .NET. The preview of the Extensions.AI library will be expanded after the release of .NET 9, and developers will have to wait to see if this approach gains popularity.
.NET 9 is expected to be released at .NET Conf, which runs from November 12-14, and will be supported for 18 months, with a focus on native applications and cloud performance. Steven Toub, a Microsoft engineering associate, outlined the multiple performance in .NET 9.

The upgrade includes the new C# 13 release, with a focus on small improvements rather than big new features. Developers who are wary of new frameworks like MAUI and Blazor may appreciate the focus on quality.
