Warner Bros Discovery is partnering with Google to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its streaming platform Max, with the aim of creating automatic subtitles.
The two companies announced that they are working to elevate the accuracy of Max's subtitles through a new tool, internally known as "caption AI."
This technology, which is based on Vertex AI for artificial intelligence products, can automatically convert video content into text. Initially, it will be implemented in unscripted programs in Max, as opposed to scripted shows and movies where dialogue is already available.

The new tool has the potential to reduce the cost of creating subtitles by up to 50%, while producing new captions can take up to 80% less time thanks to Google's AI technology, Warner Bros. Discovery and Google representatives said.
Avi Saxena, Warner Bros. Discovery's chief technology officer for direct-to-consumer services, stressed in a statement the importance of providing high-quality subtitles for the company.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s partnership with Google Cloud to use Vertex AI has accelerated the captioning process, while improving efficiency and reducing costs. Google CloudThomas Kurian emphasized that AI can transform processes in the entertainment industry.

The Max platform offers popular series and movies, with artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly being used to automate costly processes, raising concerns about potential job losses. Rob Minkoff, director of “The Lion King,” said AI could democratize the content creation process, leading to more innovation.
Warner Bros. Discovery and Google are working on technology that could automate the creation of subtitles, but the need for manual transcribers to check for accuracy will remain.
