Recognizing the importance of everyone having access to the opportunities of the digital age, COSMOTE, a member of the Telekom Group, is heavily investing in New Generation networks, developing infrastructure that boosts the Greek economy and creates growth prospects. COSMOTE is the largest investor in new technologies and infrastructure in Greece, with its investments exceeding €5 billion over the past decade, while implementing an investment plan of over €3 billion until 2027, mainly for the development of Fiber To The Home (FTTH) networks and 5G. This is the largest investment made in recent decades in Greece for telecommunications infrastructure, with COSMOTE steadily building the future of a connected Greece.
Fiber To The Home infrastructure reached an additional 32 municipalities in Greece
As for FTTH, COSMOTE is dynamically advancing the expansion of the infrastructure, installing an optical fiber network in an additional 32 municipalities across the country by 2024. COSMOTE is, in fact, the largest provider of fiber optic network in Greece, having built over 80% of the country's FTTH lines.
The new households and businesses that, through this expansion, will have access to FTTH via COSMOTE Fiber are located in the municipalities of the following prefectures: Attica (municipalities of Kallithea, Koropi, Marathon, Pallini, Markopoulo, Megara, Spata-Artemida), Boeotia (municipality of Thebes), Corfu (municipality of Corfu), Rodopi (municipality of Komotini), Corinth (municipality of Corinth), Rethymno (municipality of Rethymno), Xanthi (municipality of Xanthi), Dodecanese (municipality of Rhodes), Trikala (municipality of Trikala), Lassithi (municipality of Agios Nikolaos), Aetolia-Acarnania (municipalities of Agrinio, Nafpaktos), Euboea (municipality of Chalkida), Thessaloniki (municipalities of Kalamaria, Therma, Pylea-Chortiatis, Pavlos Melas, Delta), Argolis (municipality of Argos), Achaea (municipality of Aigio), Grevena (municipality of Grevena), Imathia (municipality of Naousa), Karditsa (municipality of Karditsa), Kilkis (municipality of Kilkis) and Pella (municipalities of Giannitsa, Edessa).
COSMOTE continues dynamically expanding its FTTH network to cover two thirds of the country's lines. Today, access to FTTH via COSMOTE Fiber, the largest fiber optic network in the country, is available to over 3.270 million private individuals and businesses across Greece.
Speeds up to 10Gbps for the first time
In parallel with the intensive investment in the expansion of COSMOTE Fiber, which is present in more than 150 municipalities throughout the country, COSMOTE also invests in its continuous upgrade.
In this context, it recently implemented a pilot project through which selected users in various areas of Attica, such as Chalandri, Marousi, Neo Psychiko, Paleo Psychiko, Filothei, Cholargos and Papagou enjoy fixed internet of up to 10Gbps via optical fiber, i.e. 10 times higher than those already commercially available.
UFBB project in progress
Within the framework of implementing its investment plan, COSMOTE is developing the FTTH infrastructure in semi‑urban and rural areas of the country, following the signing of a Partnership Agreement with the Ministry of Digital Governance for the project «Ultra‑Fast Broadband Infrastructure». Upon completion of the project, 350,000 households and businesses will gain access to ultra‑high internet speeds. The construction of the network has begun, with the works currently ongoing in the regional units of Drama, Messinia, Corinthia, Evia, Chania and Attica. The project constitutes another major investment by COSMOTE for the development of the country's network infrastructure, amounting to €375 million, of which €130 million will be covered by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), within the framework of the Programs «DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION» 2021‑2027 and «RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM» 2014‑2022.
COSMOTE is the first to bring 5G Stand-Alone to Greece
In addition to the fixed network, COSMOTE is also constantly investing in and developing its mobile network. Thus, once again, the company took the next step in the mobile communications sector in Greece, proceeding with the commercial launch of a network based on 5G Stand-Alone (SA) technology. COSMOTE 5G+ is the evolution of the COSMOTE mobile network, which will offer even more capabilities, bringing consumers and businesses closer to the Gigabit Society.
The population coverage of the COSMOTE 5G+ network is already at 50% and will expand to even more areas throughout Greece, aiming to reach 60% by the end of 2024. Access to the COSMOTE 5G+ network is available to all COSMOTE subscribers, individuals and businesses, regardless of voice plan (contract, prepaid, prepaid mobile). The condition is that they have a device that is certified for the COSMOTE 5G+ network and are located in an area with COSMOTE 5G+ network coverage.
Over 99% reached the nationwide population coverage of COSMOTE 5G
At the same time, COSMOTE 5G, the country's largest 5G network, which COSMOTE was the first to bring to Greece, exceeded 99% in nationwide population coverage, with COSMOTE achieving its goal earlier than the initial schedule.
Top awards for the COSMOTE mobile network
The COSMOTE network has earned international distinctions that demonstrate its effectiveness, speed, and high performance. In 2024 it received for the 10th consecutive year the certification «Best in Test», from the independent telecom network measurement organization umlaut. This is a performance that only three networks worldwide have achieved for ten consecutive years. It is noted that the COSMOTE network achieved the best performance in Greece overall, as well as in the individual evaluations of mobile data and voice services.
At the same time, COSMOTE was awarded as the “fastest mobile network in Greece” for the 8th consecutive year according to Speedtest® by Ookla®, the world’s leading mobile internet measurement company. According to Ookla’s data, COSMOTE maintained its strong position compared to the competition, with its subscribers enjoying on average almost double download speeds.
