The holiday season has begun and while everyone is relaxing and taking a break by going on trips or simply resting, hackers are not resting.

The Hong Kong Computer Emergency Response Team (HKCERT) has prepared the following travel tips to help you protect your online security while enjoying your travels:
Don't use public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi networks can be convenient, but they also come with risks. For example, hackers can create SSIDs that look like those of hotels, restaurants, and stores to trick users. Therefore, you should avoid accessing sensitive information or logging into your financial accounts when connecting to public Wi-Fi . If necessary, use a VPN to encrypt your internet connection and protect your data. If you're using a home router to set up a VPN , make sure you take appropriate security measures (e.g., avoid sharing your personal VPN profile with others, etc.).
Be careful when charging: Public charging sockets are very convenient when your mobile phone battery runs out, but public charging sockets from unknown sources may be vulnerable to "Juice Jacking" and your mobile phone may be infected.
Be careful what you share on social media: It’s fun to share your travel experiences on social media, but be careful not to reveal too much information (e.g. boarding passes with your personal details). Avoid revealing your exact location or travel plans, as this can make you an easy target for criminals.
Beware of travel-related phishing attacks: Be on the lookout for phishing attempts. Be wary of suspicious emails, messages, or pop-ups on social media that ask for your personal information or encourage you to click on malicious links advertising false discounts (e.g., travel, hotel, booking websites, and more).
Remember to update and protect your devices: Before you leave, make sure all your devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, smart home devices (e.g. IP cameras) and tablets, are up to date with the latest software and security patches. Set up biometric authentication methods, such as strong passwords, PINs, fingerprints or facial recognition, and enable multiple authentication methods to keep your devices secure.
Turn off your devices: Turn off devices you don't need at home and in the office (e.g. computers, routers, etc.), and when traveling turn off your portable devices when you're not using them at night.
Finally, we wish you a beautiful and safe summer!
