LastPass says the nearly 12-hour outage it caused last week was due to a bad update to its Google Chrome extension.

On June 6, LastPass users began reporting that they were unable to access accounts their. Many said they were seeing errors such as “404 Not Found,” which usually indicate that a page does not exist.
Many LastPass customers expressed frustration on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter).
"Even offline login doesn't work. I'm moving my family to 1Password," one person wrote on Reddit.

"I can't believe they don't have a contingency clause in their infrastructure. I'm basically locked out of all the sites I use until they fix this," said another user.
A few hours later, LastPass said that a bad update to its Chrome put too much strain on its servers.
"Our engineers have identified that an update to ourearlier today caused unintended loading issues in our support infrastructure. We are working hard to address the issue and are actively working towards a resolution."
Throughout Friday, LastPass continued with new updates stating that performance is now stable and operational.
However, some users continued to complain that since installing the June 6th update, they were unable to log in to LastPass or that certain features were not working.

The company's latest update on June 7th said: " LastPass performance continues to be stable and fully operational. We will continue to actively monitor the service throughout the weekend before moving this incident to a 'resolved' status ."
To avoid similar problems in the future, it is important to implement stricter testing protocols before releasing any updated software. These tests should include both functional and non-functional aspects, such as system robustness and compatibility with different browser versions.

Additionally, creating a simulation environment that mirrors the actual production environment can help detect issues that may not appear in a more limited testing environment. This allows for a better understanding of how the system will behave under real-world conditions.

Improving communication and collaboration between DevOps teams can also help , as it can help resolve issues faster and more efficiently. These teams should work closely together to ensure that software updates are well-tested and ready for release.
Finally, using monitoring and analysis tools can help detect and diagnose issues that arise after an update is released. These tools can provide valuable information about system performance and help resolve issues faster.
