The Rivian R2 is an electric SUV priced at $45,000, but the big surprises are its smaller siblings, the R3 and R3X.
Rivian had a lot to show on Thursday.

At its launch event, Rivian officially announced the Rivian R2, a mid-size electric SUV that looks a lot like a shrunken version of the company's R1S. We pretty much knew what was coming, but the company continued the shrinking and announced the even smaller Rivian R3, as well as a more rugged version of the same car called the Rivian R3X.

The Rivian R2 is a very Rivian take on competitors like the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach E.That means it's still impressively square and ready for adventure, even though it's lost a row of seats compared to the larger R1S. Inside, you'll find a wide, 15.6-inch display, and all the infotainment should be very similar to that in the R1.

We don't know all the details about the R2. We don't know the exact trim levels or options, nor their prices. But we do know that the car will come in three different basic configurations: A single-motor version that drives the rear wheels, a dual-motor version that is also all-wheel drive, and a performance-oriented tri-motor version. The latter should be powerful enough to propel the Rivian R2 from 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds.

Customers will be able to combine these motors with two different battery packs. The larger of the two, when combined with the single-motor version, will have the longest range – almost 500 kilometers. Charging will be compatible with NACS and CCS standards (an adapter is required for the latter), and the car will charge from 10% to 80% in less than half an hour.

Even though the R2 is smaller than the R1S, expect massive storage space, including a generous trunk, and seats that fold flat in both rows.

As for pricing, the company said the R2 will start at around $45,000, likely for the version with a single rear motor and the smallest battery. Expect the price to increase significantly if you opt for the more powerful dual or triple battery versions.
The company expects to start shipping the Rivian R2 in the first half of 2026.

The Rivian R3 is a sort of SUV-like hatchback that’s popular in Europe these days, only with a distinctive Rivian design. Yes, that means the oval “eyes” on the front and the light bars on both the front and rear. In this smaller package, Rivian’s usually striking design actually looks… sweet?

There are fewer details about the Rivian R3, which will arrive in 2027.But we do know that, like the R2, it will come in three engine configurations and will have nearly 310 miles of range in the least fuel-efficient version.
The R3X will only come as a three-engine version and will have a wider profile, more ground clearance, and tons of design details that scream “in the wild” to you.

Customers in Canada and the US can reserve the R2 on Rivian's website now, while reservations for the R3 and R3X, as well as international reservations for the R2, will come at a later date.
