A demo for the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available on PS5. Announced during today's State of Play broadcast dedicated to Final Fantasy VII, the PlayStation 5-exclusive version of the demo will allow players to experience the first moments of Rebirth, with Cloud and Sephiroth as selectable characters during the game's famous Nibelheim flashback chapter.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth delves into the events following Cloud and his party's escape from the city of Midgar. As in the original title, a flashback scene after the party's escape details protagonist Cloud's relationship with Shinra, the elite SOLDIER unit, and the game's main antagonist, Sephiroth.

In addition to revealing Cloud's mysterious backstory, the demo also includes some of Rebirth's new combat mechanics.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth retains the same basic combat mechanics as the Remake. During combat, players can move around the battlefield with the left stick (and dodge with circle), attack freely with square, and perform a few special moves with triangle. As you make attacks, you fill up an “Active Time Battle” meter that allows you to use special attacks, cast spells, and use items. Rebirth, however, introduces new mechanics, including Synergy Abilities.

Synergy Abilities are unique combination attacks and moves that have their own separate meter that fills up using Active Time Battle attacks. Once two characters have their meters filled, you can perform a combination attack, such as Red XIII and Cloud's "Savage Assault," which also fills your Limit Break meter according to Square Enix.

With the addition of the Junon region to the demo later this month, players can expect even more experiences and adventures that will showcase the game's world and atmosphere.

Later this month, Square Enix will also add the Junon region to the beta, which incorporates the big gun.
