Earlier this week, the Wi-Fi Alliance unveiled Wi -Fi 7, which brings faster transfer speeds and lower latency, two things that are essential for a device like the Apple Vision Pro. The current specification is Wi-Fi 6E, which is essentially Wi-Fi 6 with added support for the 6GHz band. However, look at how much faster Wi-Fi 7 will be compared to Wi-Fi 6E.

While Wi-Fi 6E has a maximum transfer speed of 9Gbps, Wi-Fi 7 supports a maximum transfer speed of up to 46Gbps. This makes Wi-Fi 7 five times faster than current Wi-Fi. In countries where Wi-Fi has access to the 6GHz band, Wi-Fi 7 will double the size of the channels, offering support for more traffic and reducing interference. 4K QAM means that transmissions carry 20% more bits than with the 1024 QAM currently used with Wi-Fi 6E. In other words, more data at once.

It will be a while before you see smartphones supporting the new Wi-Fi standard. Haitung Securitiesanalyst Jeff Putold clients a few months ago that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the first Apple devices to support Wi-Fi 7 in 2024. These phones are expected to launch next September. As we previously mentioned, Wi-Fi 7 is ideal for virtual reality devices like the Vision Pro, which makes us wonder if Apple will be able to have its new computer ready by February 2 to support Wi-Fi 7.
Considering there is speculation that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will support Wi-Fi 7, we could see the Vision Pro do the same. Stay tuned!

One of the potential issues that Wi-Fi 7 will have to address is the need for enhanced security. With the increase in speed and capacity, Wi-Fi 7 will need to be able to protect user data from cybersecurity attacks. Additionally, compatibility with older Wi-Fi devices and technologies can be a challenge. Wi-Fi 7 will need to be able to work effectively with devices that use older Wi-Fi versions, without sacrificing performance or security.
The need for wide coverage and signal stability is another issue that needs to be addressed. Wi-Fi 7 will need to provide a stable signal over long distances and in environments with many obstacles, such as buildings. Finally, the need for energy efficiency is another issue that needs to be addressed. Wi-Fi 7 will need to be able to provide high-speed, high-capacity connectivity without consuming too much power, which could negatively impact device battery life.
