As it became known, malicious actors hit Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut, Lebanon, and compromised the Flight Information Display System (FIDS).
Rafic Hariri International Airport is the main airport serving Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. The airport is named after Rafic Hariri, the former Prime Minister of Lebanon, and is located approximately 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from Beirut city centre. The airport is a major gateway for both domestic and international air travel.
The hackers displayed a message on the airport screens, claiming that Hezbollah and Iran were leading the country into war, ignoring the will of the Lebanese people. The message also stated that the trafficking of weapons would lead to the bombing of the airport.

According to LBCI, the cyberattack also disrupted the baggage inspection system known as the Baggage Handling System (BHS). Staff at the airport were forced to use police dogs to complete the baggage screening procedures. The cyberattack is a consequence of the rising tensions between Israel and Lebanon. However, no hacking group has claimed responsibility for the leak at this time.
Airports need to strengthen cybersecurity by implementing advanced technologies, such as intrusion detection systems and attack prevention tools. It is necessary to develop a response framework in the event of a cyberattack, which will include plans for recovery and restoration of systems.
