The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched a public contest called the Voice Cloning Challenge, in which individuals can submit ideas on how to protect consumers from the dangers of voice cloning through AI tools. The contest offers cash prizes, with the top prize being $25,000.
The Challenge was announced in mid-November 2023, in an effort to find ways to address the misuse of technology voice cloning. More and more malicious users are using this technique for fraud, leveraging improved text-to-speech technology, with the help of artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence can be used to clone a person's voice by analyzing an audio clip of them. By listening to the person speak, the AI can extract unique vocal characteristics and then use the data to create speech that resembles the target's voice.

Cybercriminals use technology for fraudulent activities such as voice phishing, social engineering and other voice-based scams. Fraudsters can use AI voice cloning to pretend to be someone the recipient trusts, such as a family member, friend or professional, such as a banker or lawyer.
“ Voice cloning technology poses a significant risk: families and small businesses could be targeted by scammers in the context of extortion ,” the Federal Trade Commission says , promoting the Voice Cloning Challenge
Examples of scams
One of the most impressive cases of fraud using AI voice cloning was when a CEO of a British energy company fell victim to a scam. The fraudsters used the technology to copy the voice of the parent company boss, demanding an immediate transfer of $220,000.

In another case, a fraudster used AI voice cloning technology to copy a lawyer's voice and request that money be deposited into a new account. The lawyer's client was fooled and deposited the money, believing that the lawyer had requested it.
Finally, a fraudster used voice cloning technology to copy the voice of an insurance agent and trick a customer into depositing money.
To address these risks, the FTC created the Voice Cloning Challenge. The agency calls it “an exploratory challenge” that could potentially provide direction for mitigating the risk.
The winning proposal will receive $25,000. The second best proposal will receive $4,000, and there are up to three honorable mentions, each awarded $2,000.
On January 2, the organization began accepting submissions for the competition. It will accept ideas until January 12, 8:00 PM EST.
Submissions must include a one-page proposal overview and a detailed description of up to 10 pages. Entrants may also include a video to demonstrate how their idea works.
