Mr. Cooper is sending out alerts regarding a data breach resulting from a recent cyberattack, and announcing that 14.7 million customers. The incident affects customers who have, or previously had, mortgages from the company.

Mr. Cooper is a mortgage lending company headquartered in Dallas. It is one of the largest service providers in the United States, servicing loans of $937 billion.
On October 30, 2023, the company suffered a cyberattack, which it discovered the next day. In response to the unauthorized intrusion, the company was forced to shut down all of its IT systems, including the online payment portal used to pay loans.

A week after the incident was disclosed, Mr. Cooper discovered that breach data. It was clarified that no financial information was disclosed, but the investigation continued to find all the data that had been compromised.
In a new report to the Maine Attorney General's Office, Mr. Cooper said the data breach ultimately affected 14,690,284 people. The information exposed includes:
- Full name
- Home address
- Telephone number
- Social Security Number (SSN)
- Date of birth
- Bank account number
Exposed data can be used by criminals for various scams, so customers should be very careful with any messages and emails they may receive. Also, bank fraud and identity theft are possible due to the leakage of bank account numbers.
The loan company says that as soon as it learned about the cyberattack and data breach, it locked down its systems, changed account passwords and reset the systems.
“We are monitoring the dark web and have seen no evidence that data related to this incident has been further shared, published, or otherwise used,” the company says.

Recipients of the notifications are urged to remain vigilant against unsolicited communications and to sign up for the offered 24-month protection .
