Prada: Undertakes to design spacesuits for NASA

The famous fashion house Prada is taking on the design of the new spacesuits for NASA, ensuring astronauts style and elegance during their flight.

The Artemis III mission marks the first manned mission to the Moon since Apollo 17 in December 1972. This historic mission will witness the first woman to land on the Moon, a major step forward in space exploration and understanding of the universe.

“We are excited to partner with Prada to create the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit,” said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space, in press release .

Prada's technological expertise, through the use of raw materials, manufacturing techniques and innovative design ideas, will bring about the application of advanced technologies that are critical to ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface, but also the preservation of human factors that are absent from old-style spacesuits.

The new AxEMU provide specialized tools and design elements that allow astronauts to develop greater capabilities for space exploration and scientific research. At the same time, they are protected from the harsh environment, allowing them to live and work around the moon in safety.

In 1974, NASA revealed that its spacesuits are incredibly expensive, with costs ranging from $15 million to $22 million, according to previous Insider reports.

NASA awarded Axiom Space in June 2022 the construction of its latest spacesuits, having already spent $420 million since 2017 on its effort to develop its own suits.
