Apple reportedly spending 'millions of dollars a day' on AI training
According to a report from The Information, Apple is investing millions of dollars every day in artificial intelligence. The company appears to be working on multiple AI models with multiple teams.

Apple’s unit working on conversational AI is called “Foundational Models,” according to The Information. It consists of about “16” members, including several former Google engineers. It is led by John Giannandrea, Apple’s head of artificial intelligence, who was hired in 2018 to improve Siri. (Giannandrea has reportedly expressed reservations to his colleagues about the potential usefulness of chatbots powered by language intelligence models.)
According to the report, there are additional teams at Apple working on artificial intelligence. A Visual Intelligence unit is developing an image generation, while another research group is looking at “multimodal AI, which can recognize and generate images or video, as well as text.”
These models could serve a variety of purposes. A chatbot is under construction that will “interact with customers using AppleCare,” while another will make it easier to automate multi-step tasks with Siri.

Those involved in its development tell The Information that Apple’s most advanced LLM, known internally as Ajax GPT, has been trained with “more than 200 billion parameters” and is more powerful than OpenAI, which is the basis for the initial version of ChatGPT released last year. This model was originally created for internal use, according to previous reports from Bloomberg, and remains fairly limited within the company.
