Will Apple be able to surpass Samsung with iPhone 15 sales?

Market analysis firm TrendForce has made a compelling prediction: that Apple could potentially overtake Samsung and take the lead in the global smartphonewith the upcoming release of the iPhone 15.

Historically, Samsung has been the best- selling. This is because Samsung offers a wide variety of smartphone, covering all consumer needs. The company provides budget phones as well as high-end models that can compete with the iPhone Pro and Pro Max.

In contrast, Apple targets almost exclusively premium buyers. Only the iPhone SE ranks in the mid-range segment, and there are no very affordable products. So it is almost impossible for it to compete with Samsung in terms of sales volume.

Apple could surpass Samsung this year

According to TrendForce, the launch of the iPhone 15 series could bring a significant change and put Samsung in second place.

Samsung continues to lead the manufacturing rankings, shipping 53.9 million devices in the second quarter. However, it suffered a 12.4% QoQ decline. The global economic downturn and intense competition caused Samsung's performance in the second quarter to decline compared to the same period last year. Although Samsung is set to launch new foldable models in the third quarter, the impact on its overall growth is expected to be marginal, given the relatively low sales volume compared to the Galaxy S

For Apple, the second quarter is typically the weakest in terms of production, due to the transition from older to newer models. Production for the second quarter amounted to 42 million units, a decrease of 21.2% compared to the previous quarter.

If the iPhone 15 series exceeds market expectations, Apple has a good chance of ousting Samsung from its long-standing position as the global market leader,” says TrendForce.

Last week, IDC also suggested that the new iPhones could set a new sales record.

IDC expects iOS to grow 1.1% in 2023, as iOS continues to be more resilient to macroeconomic challenges than Android (which is forecast to decline 6.0% this year). Overall, Apple has consistently outperformed its competitors during economic downturns. Where Android have seen significant year-over-year declines in sales, Apple has seen a smaller decline.
