WhatsApp is preparing to support more advanced text formatting, thus offering greater flexibility and options to users.
Text formatting is a simple way to enhance a message and make it more expressive, but it's not always supported by the app you're using. However, WhatsApp will soon add support for more advanced text formatting .
WhatsApp already supports basic text formatting, such as bold, italics, and strikethrough. The app even has a support page that explains how to do this on both Android and iPhone devices.

The new Whatsapp feature, spotted and showcased by the folks at WABetaInfo, features syntax-based formatting for quotes and bulleted lists.
This requires users to format text based on a series of operators surrounding the text “to be formatted.” It’s not an uncommon choice, as apps like Slack and Google Chat (formerly Hangouts) include a formatting bar in the syntax – WhatsApp also supports syntax for basic formatting.
More specifically: Quotation marks will be entered using “>”, while bulleted list items must be entered before “-” to receive the formatting. Users will also be able to set text to appear as a block of code by using an apostrophe at the beginning and end of the text they want to format.
While these options won't be used as often as bold, italic, and others, they're definitely good to have available and know about. This more advanced text formatting isn't widely available yet, as it remains limited to Beta versions of WhatsApp.
