The Somali government has suspended the operation of the TikTok, Telegram and betting company 1XBET apps, claiming they are used by terrorists and groups promoting violence in East Africa.

The Ministry of Communications and Technology issued an order to internet providers to block the apps on Monday. The decision comes as the battle against the jihadist group Al-Shabaab intensifies in the central region of the country.
This is the first time the government has enforced the blocking of specific apps under the guise of anti- terrorism efforts .

Earlier this month, Senegal suspended TikTok over concerns it was being used to encourage violent protests. Kenyan lawmakers have also announced an investigation into the social media platform following a request to ban it for “inappropriate” content .
