Apple has promised to fix a bug in iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch devices that could affect Screen Time restrictions for children, The Wall Street Journal reports. The bug affects a feature called Downtime that allows parents to remotely set times when children can't use their devices.

A spokesperson told the WSJ: “We are aware that some users may be experiencing issues with resetting screen mirroring to their settings. We take these reports very seriously and have made and will continue to make updates to improve the situation.”

Parents using the feature are facing the problem of scheduled times being reverted to older settings or removed altogether, allowing children to use their devices whenever they want. One user changed their passcode to make sure their kids didn’t guess it, but found they had to reset the feature “two or three times a week.” It’s worth noting that kids don’t always report the problem in a timely manner. About 2,300 people on an Apple discussion page reported experiencing the same error.

Apple was aware of the issue before, but reportedly fixed with the release of iOS 16.5 in May. However, WSJ reporters discovered the issue in later versions and even in the iOS 17 beta.

Screen Time was introduced at Apple’s 2018 developer conference, allowing parents to remotely check their kids’ Activity Report and manage the time they spend on apps . They can also set a custom time limit for each app that kids can’t extend, or create a downtime period to block everything except selected software and phone calls for a specific amount of time. Apple has yet to announce when a fix will be released .
