Many Magic sets are themed around a specific location in the game's multiverse. Somewhere with a distinct identity, like Innistrad, where everything is a Hammer horror movie, or Eldraine, a land of myth and legend. The set below is not one of those. March of the Machine is an event set that has been around since 2019's War of the Spark. It takes place on a larger scale and is the culmination of a story that spanned the last three expansion sets.

Where the previous series left off, in the industrial hell of Phyrexia, the Mother of Machines seemed to have won. Elesh Norn's plan to launch an invasion on multiple planes simultaneously using a corrupted cosmic tree known as the Realmbreaker had succeeded, and her Legion of Machines was poised to conquer and transform the multiverse, engulfing the inhabitants of one world after another and transforming them into porcelain and metal Phyrexians to conquer even more worlds.
The group of planetwalkers who tried to stop it failed, and many of them were transformed into Phyrexians. But it's not over yet. A final alliance of planetwalkers and legends from across the multiverse continues to battle the Machine Legion across all dimensions.

March of the Machine illustrates this in a way by pairing two existing characters fighting side by side. Each of them is an odd couple in their own right. Given that the teaser trailer shows one of Eldraine's gingerbread men, let's hope he gets his own card - maybe teaming up with a Colossal Dreadmaw or something.
Mechanically, all of those working together will be represented by a new backup mechanic that grants bonus abilities along with a +1/+1 counter, with these bonuses varying and based on the creature type. On the Phyrexian side, invaders will have incubators, cards that convert into cards for 2 mana, giving them the ability to leave various pods to sit there until they hatch into monsters.
Another feature that March of the Machine introduces is a new type of card. Battle cards are duplicates and turn from their original form when defeated into something more powerful. The point is that if you want to become stronger you have to fight your own battles because these cards, instead of protecting you, will have to be protected by your opponent.
To create the multiverse nature of the conflict, the game brings back the planechase format. This gives each player a separate deck of cards, each with a specific location that affects magic or some interplanetary travel effect.
March of the Machine will be available in the usual booster packs, draft, set, and collector boosters that contain additional Multiverse Legends cards, reprints of classics like Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, which will not be legal in classic format but will be game-changing in draft. Prerelease events for March of the Machine will run from April 14 to April 20. It will be released in Magic: The Gathering Arena on April 18 and officially on April 21. A smaller epilogue set, called March of the Machine: The Aftermath with 50 cards, will be released in both digital and physical formats on May 12.
