The LockBit ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the cyberattack on ION Group, a UK-based software company whose products are used by financial institutions, banks and corporations for trading, investment management and market analysis.

On January 31, 2023, the company released a brief statement explaining that the incident had an impact on ION Cleared Derivatives – part of the ION Markets division.
“ION Cleared Derivatives, a division of ION Markets, experienced a cybersecurity incident that began on January 31, 2023 and impacted some of its services,” the company said.
The attack had a lasting impact, with customers using ION Group services in both the United States and Europe forced to manually process transactions, resulting in significant delays.

Taking the necessary measures to address these issues, the FIA – the world-renowned trade organization – has issued a statement and is working with affected members to properly analyze the evolving circumstances.
LockBit ransomware recently added ION Group to its list of victims on its data leak website. It also boasts that it stole sensitive information during the attack and promises to make it public on February 4th.

If the ransomware perpetrators have data from ION Group, its disclosure could potentially harm large investors by exposing private information and damaging their reputations. In this case, serious damage to themselves and their organizations would be inevitable.
