DC Rainmaker, the outdoor enthusiast blog, has discovered that Apple’s new Series 8 and SE watches rely solely on the built-in GPS chip to track workouts and distance. Despite this increased power usage, Apple still claims a battery life of up to 18 hours – making the Series 8 and SE much better than before!

This change isn't exactly a new revelation — it was mentioned during the Apple Watch reveal in September — but DC Rainmaker says Apple hasn't made any official announcement about the change. Now it appears to have been discovered in a footnote at the bottom of a support document about calibrating the Apple Watch for workout and activity.

This update is a boon for iPhone , as it saves battery life. It’s also encouraging to know that Apple is making behind-the-scenes changes that make its products work even better, without being intrusive. Even if you don’t see a difference on watch , this improvement will significantly extend its battery life – just like when they added an always-on display with the Series 5, but still managed to get 18 hours of use!
