The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has granted Virgin Orbit a launch permit from Spaceport Cornwall, allowing the company to make history as the first satellite mission to be launched from UK Boeing soil . Virgin Orbit plans to launch nine satellites via LauncherOne rocket aboard the iconic 747 “Cosmic Girl” aircraft next January! Virgin Orbit first announced plans to launch from a site at Cornwall Airport Newquay four years ago. The first flight was originally scheduled for mid-December, but was postponed due to technical problems and a lack of a permit.
Despite these concerns, the CAA said the licence to Virgin Orbit was issued within 15 months, “regulators space.” The regulator added that it had taken “all measures” to mitigate safety-related risks. Spaceport Cornwall received launch certification last month.

In addition to the launch permit, Virgin Orbit has also received a range control permit, which allows it to issue warning alerts and monitor the progress of missions. According to Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart, receiving these permits and launch permits brings the company one step closer to the first satellite launch from UK soil. “We are moving towards the first launch from Cornwall – maintaining a strong focus on a safe and successful mission for everyone.”
The permits were issued after the consent of the UK Transport Secretary, Mark Harper. This shows that the Minister agrees with the licensing decisions made by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

As mentioned above, Virgin Orbit plans to launch nine rockets via LauncherOne rocket aboard the Boeing 747 “Cosmic Girl.” For its maiden mission, “Start Me Up,” Cosmic Girl will take off, fly to an altitude of 35,000 feet, and then release the LauncherOne rocket that will carry the satellites into orbit. Permits for the nine satellites have not yet been issued, but are reportedly “imminent.”
