Android: Why can't I make a call? 10 Ways to fix it!

Not being able to make a phone call from your Android is incredibly frustrating – that’s the whole point of having a phone – especially when you need to make an important call. If your Android phone isn’t making calls, you’re probably looking for a solution. Luckily, there are several potential solutions you can try before you panic or rush out to buy a new device. Let’s explore 10 different ways to fix your Android phone’s problem with making calls.

Check if you are connected to a network

If the answer is no, then you won’t be able to make calls from Android phone. You can check the network at the top of your screen – if you don’t have a signal, then there may be no nearby cell towers that are compatible with your device (or a dead spot). In that case, try moving around until you find one. Another cause could be that mobile data is turned off on your device, which can be easily fixed by going to Quick Settings and tapping Mobile Data.

If you think you may have been disconnected from your mobile network due to an unpaid bill, don't worry. In most cases, you'll receive a text message or email notification if this happens. However, sometimes these notifications can slip through the cracks. If you're concerned about this possibility, check your carrier's app or contact your carrier for more information.

Make sure Airplane Mode is turned off

When you have Airplane Mode turned on, your mobile network is turned off. This means that all calls will go straight to voicemail and you won't be able to make any outgoing calls. To check if Airplane Mode is turned off, swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal Quick Settings and make sure Airplane Mode (sometimes called Flight Mode) isn't highlighted. If it is, turn it off by tapping it again.

Note: You will still be able to make calls through messaging apps, like Facebook Messenger , if you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. You can enable Wi-Fi calling from the Your Phone app by selecting the Phone app and tapping the three dots in the top right corner.

  • Check if it's enabled. If it is, adjust the setting so that it only blocks notifications from specific apps or people, not all incoming calls.

Note: Check if call forwarding is turned on if you're not receiving calls. If it's on, your calls may be forwarded to another phone number or voicemail. You can access this in the Phone app by doing the following: Tap the three dots > select Settings.

Close the phone app

If you can't make calls, it's likely due to the Phone app. To see if this is the case, you can restart the app.

Check the SIM card

If you just got a new Android phone or a new SIM, the card may have been inserted incorrectly (or damaged). To check this, remove the SIM and check that it matches the insertion instructions that came with your purchase. If the problem persists, contact your carrier.

Check for malware

Although malware may not be blocking your network connection, it is a possible reason why you can't make calls. The first thing you should do is restart your phone in Safe Mode and then uninstall any apps that seem questionable.

Clear cache data

If you're having trouble making phone calls on your Android device, it could be due to a software glitch. If that's the case, clearing your phone's cache data may be helpful in getting rid of the glitch and getting your device working again. Note: This will not automatically delete your contacts or call history

Here's how you can do it:

Try a factory reset

If you've tried everything else to get your Android to make calls and nothing has worked, your last resort is to factory reset your phone. Keep in mind that this will erase all data on your phone (except what's stored on the SD), so be sure to back up anything important beforehand.
