Businesses are struggling to keep up with the expanding attack surface, according to a new report from Trend Micro.
Researchers surveyed more than 4,100 businesses in North America, Latin America, Europe , and Asia-Pacific and concluded that the level of risk increased significantly between the second half of 2021 and the first half of 2022. The survey found that the number of businesses expecting to be successfully affected increased from 84% to 90%, while the number of those expecting to be exposed within the next year increased from 76% to 85%.
Jon Clay, vice president of threat intelligence at Trend Micro, says hybrid working is making life difficult for IT departments.
“If you can’t see it, you can’t protect it. With the rise of hybrid working and more complex IT, many organizations are struggling to fill security coverage gaps.”

According to researchers, one of the biggest risks security professionals face when trying to prevent cyberattacks is their inability to identify where critical data assets and applications are located.

Overall, the biggest threats facing businesses are BEC scams, clickjacking (a form of attack where the attacker places an invisible link or button over a legitimate link or button, leading the user to something malicious), fileless attacks (a type of malicious activity that uses legitimate tools built into a system to perform a cyberattack), ransomware, malware , and credential theft.
