Hangar 13: The new Mafia game is in development

After months of hearing rumors, Hangar 13 confirmed today that a brand new Mafia game is in development.

The news came in a Mafia 20th anniversary interview with Hangar 13 General Manager Roman Hladík and Head of Production and Media Tomáš Hřebíček . The pair took the time to look back on the franchise's journey over the past 20 years before Hladík announced the news of a new hypothetical Mafia 4.

“I’m happy to confirm that we’ve started working on a brand new Mafia project!” said Hladík. “While it’s a few years away and we can’t share anything more at this time, we’re really excited to continue working on this beloved franchise and entertain players with new stories.”

As the name suggests, Mafia is basically an open-world version of The Godfather , featuring a story spanning from the 1930s to the 1960s. Hangar 13 has been leading the Mafia series since 2016 with Mafia 3 while also making a remake of the original Mafia in 2020 (Mafia: Definitive Edition), which we praised for its "excellent performances from the new cast, a fantastic driving model , and a beautiful and authentic 1930s-style city."

A hypothetical Mafia 4 has been rumored for some time. It's unclear where and when the game , or if it will be a continuation of any of the three previous games, but based on the story's development, a 1980s setting similar to Scarface isn't out of the question.

In addition to a new Mafia 4, another title was in development at Hangar 13 until it was canceled, and it would have been a multiplayer superhero game.

Multiple reports from last year indicated that the title, codenamed Volt, had been in development since 2017 and cost Take-Two around $53 million as it underwent "multiple changes."

Executives decided to cancel the game after they felt the project was "not a worthwhile investment due to the time required for development.".

Either way, it will be a while before we see this new Mafia project, whatever it turns out to be.
