According to Meta's Head of Security Policy, Nathaniel Gleicher, the "lock profile" tool gives users "one-click" access to additional privacy and security features. "When their profile is locked, people who aren't their friends can't download or share their profile photo or see posts on their timeline," Gleicher said.

This isn’t the first time Facebook has encouraged users in “unsafe” areas to lock their profiles. Over the summer, Facebook enabled a “lock profile” tool for people in Afghanistan. The company says the feature could be especially useful for journalists, activists, and others who may be at greater risk during such critical times.

As we said above, the social media platform has also formed a task force to monitor what is happening in Ukraine, so that it can take additional measures if necessary. “In response to the unfolding military conflict in Ukraine, we have created a Special Operations Center to respond in real time,” Gleicher said. “It is staffed by specialists (including people who speak the language) so that we can closely monitor the situation and act as quickly as possible.”
