A new law in France will soon require car manufacturers to include a disclaimer in their car ads that encourage more energy-efficient alternative transportation, such as walking, cycling or public transportation.

The new legislation will come into effect on March 1 and requires one of three statements to be included in any car ads in France.
The three options are:
- For short trips, walking or cycling
- Consider carpooling
- Take public transportation
One of the three will be required in any form of advertising, including online, print, radio or television. It must be clearly legible or, in the case of radio, heard loudly at the end of the ad.

Failure to include the disclaimer could subject automakers to a fine of up to €50,000 (about $56,000 US).
France has taken several steps to reduce emissions in the transport sector and improve its energy efficiency.
The country has announced a ban on the sale of all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040. Paris has announced that it will move this deadline to 2030 in the city and has also proposed banning cars from the city centre, creating a haven for cyclists and pedestrians.

France's ecological transition minister, Barbara Pompili, argued that the new legislation helps promote a solution that is more comprehensive than simply switching to electric cars, but rather focuses on reducing the energy required for transportation.
