During the nearly hour-long attack on Wednesday afternoon, users may have experienced serious problems when trying to access the online service that supports Overwatch, Call of Duty: Warzone, Hearthstone, Diablo's online features and more.

Blizzard said on Twitter that the problem was caused by a DDoS attack on its verified customer service account and also on a “Breaking News” item that some users might have seen on the PC Battle.net client if they tried to log in during the attack.

Users who managed to log in may have been placed in a queue warning of high traffic, like this message:

On DownDetector, reports of outages skyrocketed, for a number of Activision Blizzard properties, with thousands reporting that Battle.net was down, but only a few hundred complaining about individual games losing service.

We didn't even see the typical number of reports that appear on Twitter when a game goes offline, so it becomes clear that the shutdown was not complete and that the “high latency and disconnects” probably did not affect the majority of players. Outage reports seem to have returned more or less to normal levels.
