Believe it or not, mobile and broadband speeds are increasing everywhere. Even with the pandemic and the transition to 5G, Ookla Speedtest Global Index research shows that global mobile and broadband download speeds have increased by 60% and 32%, respectively, in the last year.

This year, the mobile leaders are the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Qatar, China, Cyprus, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Australia and Bulgaria. This means that Canada is not in the top 10 of the global ranking.
Canada fell to 8th in 2020 – it was 6th in 2019 – before falling below the top 10 in 2021, thanks to improvements made by Cyprus and Kuwait. Meanwhile, the US has not been included in the list for the past three years, which is not surprising as the US seems to be lagging behind in 5G speeds.
When it comes to broadband, the world leaders include Monaco, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Romania, Switzerland, South Korea, Chile, Denmark and Liechtenstein.
The United States ranked 8th in 2019, but fell to 9th in 2020 and did not make the top 10 for 2021. Countries like Chile, Denmark , and Liechtenstein finally made the list. And Canada has not made the top 10 in the past three years.

Part of the problem in the US is inaccurate coverage maps for both broadband and mobile, as well as slow broadband speed requirements. But it seems that work is being done to fix these issues. The FCC recently released its first mobile coverage map and plans to do the same for broadband. The US is also poised to put pressure on providers to offer faster broadband speeds.
