The National Crime Agency UK (NCA) said that Phillip Nutt, a resident of Bristol, appeared in court on June 24. Nutt had previously pleaded guilty to possessing, making and distributing indecent images.

According to the NCA, Nutt was a Ministry of Defence employee who “used his IT skills to search for and download images of child pornography on the Dark Web.”

Nutt was arrested by the NCA at his country house in Cornouaille in 2020. Police found about 300 images and videos of child pornography on his personal phone and on his computers.

However, it is said that the defendant had a much larger collection at his disposal , stored in cloud-based accounts.

With the help of international law enforcement agencies, the NCA discovered 445 online folders containing 18,641 files. These files included indecent images and “hundreds” of videos related to child pornography. Some of the videos were up to two hours long.

The former Defense Department employee had made sure to hide his collection of child pornography in a lockbox app that looked like a calculator. However, he participated in a forum on the Dark Web where he discussed his activities, called “PedoPub.”

“I have everything secured and no one can see it unless I accidentally leave it unlocked,” Nutt told another chat room user. “I also have false camera storage, so if someone asks to see my photos, it shows normal photos. The good ones are hidden.”

“Nutt’s sentencing serves as a warning to all that we will work with authorities across the world to protect children and bring offenders to justice,” said Derek Evans, Senior Investigating Officer at the NCA. “As long as the demand for child pornography remains high among corrupt people like Nutt, it will continue to be supplied. This investigation has broken part of that cycle and the NCA has succeeded in arresting someone who posed a significant threat to children.”
