Apple yesterday released a new firmware update for the second-generation AirPods (AirPods 2) and AirPods Pro. The new update is version 3E751 and comes seven months after the last firmware update 3A283, which was released in September 2020.

As we said, the update is only for AirPods Pro and AirPods 2, not for the first-generation AirPods. Apple hasn't provided any information about what's included in the updated firmware, so it's not yet known what improvements or bug fixes the new version brings.
Some users who have received the update are reporting that Apple has fixed a bug that caused AirPods to route audio to the wrong devices. The bug was observed on many Macs running macOS 11.2. But with the new AirPods firmware update and macOS Big Sur 11.3, it appears to have been fixed.

When it comes to updating AirPods software, there's no standard way. However, installing the new firmware is usually done over-the-air while the AirPods are connected to an iOS. Under normal circumstances, if you place your AirPods 2 or AirPods Pro in case , connect them to charger (with them plugged in), and pair them with an iPhone or iPad, the update will take place after a short period of time.

If you want to check which firmware version you are currently using and whether a new version has been installed, you can follow the steps below:
- Connect your AirPods or AirPods Pro to your iOS device.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Click About.
- Tap AirPods.
- Look at the number next to “Firmware Version”.
Once the new version is installed on more users' AirPods, more details will be revealed about the changes, improvements, and fixes the new firmware brings.
