On an Android device, most users use as the default search engine Google, but you can actually change it if you want.

Google services are built into Android devices, but that doesn't mean you have to use them. The same goes for Google Search. You can easily change your default search engine. Here's how to do it.

Android

Change the default search engine via Chrome

First, you need to choose the browser you will be searching in. Let's look at Google Chrome, which is the browser available on all Android devices:

  • Open Google Chrome on your Android device .
  • Tap the three-dot menu, located in the top right corner.
  • Select “Settings”.
  • Then, tap “Search Engine” (it should say Google, but once you tap it, more options will appear).
  • Select one of the search engines shown in the list.

That's it! With this easy step, you've chosen a different search engine. Other browsers (besides Google Chrome) also allow you to choose another search engine as your default. Explore the settings in whatever browser you use to see how you can do this.

Change the Google Home Screen Widget

Another way users access a search engine on their Android device is through a widget on the home screen. The Google Search widget is found by default on many Android phones and tablets.

How to change the default search engine on Android?

To change the search engine, the Google Search widget must first be removed:

  • Long press the search bar.
  • Depending on the launcher, there may be differences, but an option to remove the widget will definitely appear at some point on the screen.

Once removed, you can add a different search widget to the home screen to go directly to another engine:

  • Press and hold an empty spot on the home screen.
  • You will see a menu with the option “Widgets”. Select it.
  • Look through the list of widgets and find the one that corresponds to a search app you have installed (e.g. DuckDuckGo after installing the web browser from the Play Store). Long press the widget.
  • Drag it to the home screen and release your finger to drop it.

Now you have quick access to the search engine from your home screen!

By following the methods above, you will be able to easily change the default engine on your Android device and use your favorite search engines.
