The most cybercrime victims in the US are in Illinois, according to a recent study by Clario . The London-based cybersecurity firm analyzed cybercrime data from the UK and US to determine which geographic areas were most affected by hackers .
In the US, Illinois came out on top, with 14.6 victims per 1,000 people. This was followed by Virginia, with 13.2 victims per 1,000 people, and New York, with 11 victims per 1,000 people. In addition, total cybercrime losses amounted to $107,152,415 in Illinois, $92,467,791 in Virginia, and $19,876,576 in New York.
It is worth noting that California was the region in the US where the most money, with malicious actors stealing $573,624,151. Cybercrime victims in Ohio lost more money, per person, on average ($28,734) than anywhere else in the US.
In the UK, Somerset had the highest number of victims (13.6 victims per 1,000 people), followed by Northumbria (13.5) and Dorset (9.1).
As Infosecurity Magazine reports, in the UK, Jersey recorded the highest cybercrime losses per person, with malicious actors stealing an average of $11,244 from each victim.
During the research it was also found that victims residing in large cities lost much less money from cybercrime on average. In New York, the average amount stolen from each victim was $516, while in London it was $1,049.
Many victims both in the US and in the United Kingdom claimed that local authorities and their legal system could do more to respond to cybercrime. Specifically, 57% of the British said that reporting such incidents to local authorities received no response – the same was said by 37% of the American respondents.
Meanwhile, only 21% of people in the United Kingdom felt that the legal system would help them in cybercrime incidents, while at the same time, 55% of Americans considered that law enforcement disappointed them.
Clario compiled the research by combining, among other things, government data, census data and open crime data from local police departments and forces on the number of victims of cybersecurity-related crimes. As for the data on financial losses, this was compiled from the FBI ’s “2019 Internet Crime Report ” as well as data from the UK police.
