Microsoft Edge will notify you if your password is compromised

A new built-in password generator and a feature to track leaked credentials on Windows and macOS systems is being released by Microsoft through the Edge program .

Microsoft Edge 88 now helps you keep your onlineby creating secure and strong passwords when updating existing credentials or signing up for new accounts.

Once enabled, the browser will automatically generate a password if Edge recognizes a password field and you click on it.

The browser will also save your credentials and allow you to autofill them when logging into your account across all devices .

“Microsoft Edge offers a built-in strong password generator that you can use when signing up for a new account or when changing an existing password,” says Microsoft.

“Simply look for the drop-down password suggested by the browser in the password field and when selected, it will be automatically saved in the browser and synced across devices for easy future use.”

The feature has been in testing since September 2020, when it was added to Microsoft Edge Canary/Dev builds.

Microsoft

The new version of Microsoft Edge 88 also introduces a new feature called Password Monitor. This will alert you if your account credentials have been leaked online after a data breach. You will receive a notification if one of your accounts has been exposed, on the New Tab page, or when you visit the website of the service that has been compromised.

“When any of the passwords you have saved in the browser match those shown in the list of leaked credentials, Microsoft Edge will notify you and prompt you to update your password,” Microsoft says.

Microsoft Edge isn't the only browser that offers credential tracking.

Both Chrome and Firefox now come with built-in data breach notification services for saved logins so users can quickly recover their credentials.

Both features are available in Microsoft Edge 88. To be able to increase the security of your accounts using the services, you will need to sign in to your Microsoft account in the browser.
