Rumors have been circulating about a deal between Tesla and Steel Dynamicsto supply the steel that the former will use in its new electric truck Cybertruck . The supply will come from a new $1.7 billion factory in Texas, not far from its own factory in the same area.
When Tesla introduced the Cybertruck last year, one of its most interesting features was the fact that the vehicle would not be built using the traditional system , but would feature an exoskeleton.
According to Tesla:
«The Cybertruck is built with an outer shell for ultimate durability and passenger protection. Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is engineered for superior strength, from Ultra-Hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel and Tesla Armored Glass.»
The company said they used the best steel they could get their hands on:
«If there was anything better, we would use it. It helps eliminate dents, damage, and long-term corrosion with a smooth, solid-color exoskeleton that forms the exterior shell of the car and provides maximum protection for you and your passengers.»

CEO Elon Musk even said that he is using the same steel alloy that will be used in SpaceX 's next spacecraft :
“We will use the same alloy in the Starship rocket.“
Rumors have recently circulated that Tesla could source the steel from Steel Dynamics, which is building a massive new factory in Texas.

San Patricio County Judge David Krebs, who is involved in approving the $1.7 billion project, told local media:
«Steel Dynamics' $1.7 billion plant under construction in Sinton is scheduled to begin operations by fall 2021. Not only will it provide hundreds of new jobs, it will also supply the steel used in the construction of Tesla's Cybertruck.»
Of course, Tesla is currently building its own factory in Austin, Texas, just a few hours away from the new steel plant.
However, neither Tesla nor Steel Dynamics have confirmed the supply deal for the Cybertruck.
Tesla plans to begin mass production for its electric truck in late 2021 and has over 650,000 reservations for the electric vehicle, at last count. Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said there will be challenges in getting the Cybertruck into production on time, as new methods are needed to manufacture that steel exoskeleton.
