Usually when we see the term “3D,” we think of failed products like TVs and phones. Part of the problem is that 3D is often seen as the beginning of a new product category, rather than being approached as a new tool for expression.

Lucid , the company behind the LucidPix app , has taken a clever approach to 3D as a creative tool. Whether you have a latest-gen device like the iPhone 11 or Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, or an older one like the Motorola Moto G6 or iPhone 6S, you can use the LucidPix app to take 3D photos. Best of all, you don't need a special accessory or multiple rear cameras.

In place of these tools, LucidPix uses AI to render 3D photos, which move as you shake and move your phone.

Earlier this year at CES, Lucid showed off how its magical imaging app doesn't require specialized hardware, like 2019's $1,300 Red Hydrogen One. LucidPix captures 3D photos with software that mimics the way the human brain processes depth.

The software was launched with the company’s LucidCam VR180 camera and was used by Red on the Hydrogen phone and the unreleased Red 8K 3D Lithium cinema camera. During the beta, the app was extensively tested for features and interface, with over a million people testing it out.

LucidPix can also convert your existing 2D photos into 3D. The resulting images can be shared with the app’s community or on other platforms like Facebook, which has built-in support for displaying 3D images. Adding this social aspect to the app allows you to share and view 3D images, just like people do with 2D images on Instagram or Snapchat.

“The way consumers express themselves digitally and visually has increasingly evolved into what we physically see with our eyes. So in recent years, the visual medium has become more multidimensional, leading to more portrait photography, 3D content, and AR and VR creation,” said Han Jin, founder and CEO of Lucid.

Jin says the technology powering the LucidPix app will one day influence future photo formats from AR and VR, to 3D and holograms, either viewed on a phone or with specialized headsets.
