A new era for storage is coming ,as Nimbus Data has revealed that a 400TB could be released by 2023.
Nimbus Data CEO and founder Thomas Izakovich, in an exclusive email exchange with TechRadar Pro, revealed that SSDs with capacities up to 400TB are in the pipeline.
“We can do 200TB in 2021 and probably 400TB by 2023,” he said, referring to the unformatted capacity of the company, which have not yet been announced. This would be a significant milestone, because a candidate SSD with a native capacity of 400TB is equivalent to 1 PB in tape capacity.
Tape vendors typically provide a native-compressed size for tape storage. The largest size , LTO-8, currently has a maximum capacity of 12 TB native and 30 TB compressed, while LTO-9, expected to be released later this year, is designed to double the capacity to 24 TB native and 60 TB compressed.
In other words, you'll need at least 17 of these storage types to reach the projected capacity of a 400TB Nimbus Data SSD.
While the Nimbus drive is likely to be more expensive, it will likely be much smaller, as it doesn't need a separate drive, and much faster.
