Microsoft announced that it will release Windows 10X first on single-screen devices, even though this version of Windows was intended for dual-screen devices. Panos Panay, head of Windows and devices at Microsoft, said that the company designed Windows 10X with flexibility in mind. It is precisely this flexibility that made the company's team change its goal and bring Windows 10X to single- screen, thereby offering Microsoft customers a new and different way to work, learn and play.
Microsoft didn't say when single-screen devices, such as laptops, would support Windows 10X, nor when dual-screen devices with the operating system. However, it did say that Windows 10X would be available on single-screen devices first. Panay said the company is still working with its OEM partners to bring dual-screen devices to market. The company has seen a 75% year-over-year increase in time spent on Windows 10.
During the lockdown, most people were using laptops or PCs instead of smartphones or tablets for work or study. Originally intended for dual-screen devices like the Surface Neo, Windows 10X includes a more simplified and modern interface . Microsoft is working to modernize Windows 10X with some UI and UX changes that improve the basics, such as multitasking, using the Start Menu, and quick access to settings. Therefore, in Windows 10, there is no Start Menu in the form we knew it. Also, while the public was expecting the first dual-screen devices from Microsoft, those plans will be delayed as the presentations have been moved to next year. Finally, it is not yet known whether the new version of Windows will also be available for existing Windows 10 devices or how the transition from one version to another will be made, however, more information about this will most likely be reported at the Build 2020 conference, which is to be held online this year on May 19-20.
