The world of IT is an extremely rewarding field of work. Not only do you work with new technologies, but you also share that experience with people who share your passion. Working as an IT professional allows you to help others do their daily tasks efficiently, reliably, and securely.
Additionally, your daily work life varies depending on the task you are assigned to, so you don't suffer from the routine that occurs in other jobs.
But the world of IT isn't always pleasant. In fact, the job of an IT professional can be incredibly stressful at times. On any given day, you might experience a network outage that's essential to production and/or workflow, or the aftermath of a ransomware at a company you support and expect you to resolve the issues that arose from that attack.
We should also emphasize the never-ending need to stay informed about modern technology. IT is a field where if you are not constantly studying new technologies and the developments surrounding them, you will inevitably fall behind.
All of the above makes for a very stressful environment that can affect anyone, at any time. So what can you do when you need to find peace in the stressful world of IT? Let's look at some thoughts on this.
New staff recruitment
Let’s start with the basics. Your IT department needs enough staff to function properly. You can’t (and shouldn’t) do it all yourself. No matter how great you feel about being a team on your own that gets things done, you should have a team of collaborators ready to delegate tasks. That means you should report the situation to your IT manager, who then has the task of making the appropriate recommendation to management and requesting the hiring of staff.
Make sure your manager understands that if there are not enough staff, the company risks facing high attrition rates from stress and overwork. And if you continue to work with five or ten people, you will not last.
Think of it like this:
When management comes to your manager and says, “We need to build this app,” your department head doesn’t automatically go to your existing IT team and say, “Build this app.” The company has to hire developers to do it.
So make sure your manager understands how important it is to have enough staff in your IT department to keep everything running smoothly – without losing sleep every night.
Take leave
One issue in the IT sector is the lack of quality vacation time. This doesn't mean staying away from the company for a week or going to a beach while clutching a laptop.
When you take time off, do it right. Take a break and leave work behind. We especially emphasize the last part of the sentence. Leave work behind. You have taken time off to recharge your batteries, which you can't do when your mind doesn't really leave the confines and tasks of the company.
Make your vacation special so you can renew your appetite for life and all it has to offer. A career in IT is a demanding one, so you'll need that release.
Leave work at your workplace
This is really hard, but if you can leave work behind on vacation, you can do the same thing when you’re home. One of the biggest issues we’ve seen in IT is that a lot of IT people take their work home. When they don’t get a specific task done during work hours, they’ll say, “I’ll finish it from home tonight.” If you don’t get a task done today, it can wait until tomorrow.
Of course, only if it can really wait until tomorrow. You don't want to put off something that needs to be done immediately. If your task is something that needs to be done immediately, then make sure it gets done as soon as possible. But if it's something that can be put off, then leave it for the next day.
Developers write code anywhere, not just in their offices. Don't do that. Set boundaries.
One issue you will face as an IT technician is that some companies will ask you to work whenever they want. This means that they will call you at any time. If this is part of your job, then you need to adapt accordingly. If you work in different conditions, then you should have a policy of not bringing work home.
Exercise
You don't have to reach a point where stress has taken over your life to start exercising. You just have to exercise regularly. According to many studies that have been done on the subject:
“Exercise is considered vital for maintaining mental health and can reduce stress. Studies show that it is very effective in reducing fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and enhancing overall cognitive function. This can be especially helpful when stress has depleted your energy or ability to concentrate.”
Make exercise a part of your daily routine. Try running or going to the gym. Sign up for a basketball or soccer league. Whatever you choose, make exercise a part of your life. You'll feel better and sleep even better.
Conclusion
You may think that fighting stress is impossible. It's not. If you do something about your mental health, you will not only enjoy a better quality of life, but you will also ensure your well-being on a personal and professional level.
Take the time you need and make the effort. Mental balance is not as difficult as it seems, as long as you believe in yourself and your capabilities.
