Microsoft today published a support document warning Windows 10 users that the upcoming May 2019 Update may not install on their systems if they use external USB storage devices or SD cards.
The company reportedly noticed issues with “inappropriate drive reassignment” and cites it as the main reason for excluding the May 2019 Update.
“Inappropriate disk reseating may occur on computers that have an external USB device or SD memory card installed during the installation of the May 2019 Update,” the company said. “For this reason, these computers are currently blocked from receiving the update.”
So if you are using a USB or SD card, you will see the following message if you try to upgrade to Windows 10 May 2019 Update.
Fortunately, there is a quick and simple solution to this issue. Microsoft recommends that users remove any external USB or SD media and restart the update installation.
This includes USB drives, external USB hard drives, or SD cards inserted into card readers.
In the long term, Microsoft plans to address the “improper disk reinsertion” issue in a future Windows 10 update.
Microsoft will not block the May update from all Windows 10 users, but only from those using the April 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1803) or the October 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1809). Users using older versions of Windows 10 will be able to perform the May update without any problems.
