Microsoft promised a modern version of File Explorer a few years ago, but the project never reached the final stage despite the many drafts that appeared from time to time in Windows 10 build previews.
The company was reportedly focusing more on improving the appearance of the existing Win32 version of File Explorer, and the latest "stable" Windows 10 update brought a new dark theme,.
However, File Explorer will receive a major facelift in the next major Windows 10 update, according to a post by HTNovo.
The company is reportedly currently exploring new ways to bring Fluent Design to File Explorer, and if all goes according to plan, test versions will roll out to users later in 2019.
However, the development phase seems to take quite some time, so we will probably see the new File Explorer in the next major Windows 10 update that will be released in April 2020.
So users participating in the Windows Insider program could get a taste of the new File Explorer in late 2019, when Microsoft has developed Windows 10 20H1 and has pushed builds to the Fast Ring.
Currently, the experimental Windows 10 20H1 operating system is already available to those registered with Skip Ahead, but it does not yet have any major changes.
