A HoloLens application related to pre-operative patient planning has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The HoloLens OpenSight Augmented Reality System is an augmented reality for surgical applications, manufactured by Novarad, and enables surgeons to create interactive 2D, 3D and even 4D anatomical images of their patients, projecting them accurately onto the patient's body, in order to enable precise surgical planning.
Unlike previous pre-operative planning systems that use virtual reality, OpenSight uses Microsoft HoloLens® glasses, which allow physicians to view 3D images of patients in augmented reality, highlight relevant anatomy and avoid critical structures, while simultaneously being able to place virtual tools and guidance systems to more accurately plan a surgical approach.
The overlay of holograms can be viewed simultaneously by multiple HoloLens users, making it useful in both clinical and educational settings. There is also an educational version of the software available for medical students to perform virtual dissections on cadavers.
