Falkon browser is a KDE web browser that uses the QtWebEngine rendering engine, formerly known as QupZilla.
The purpose of the project is to create a light browser that is available on all major platforms.
The project was originally started for educational purposes only. But since then, Falkon has evolved into a browser with a lot of features.
Falkon browser has all the standard features you would expect from a web browser. It includes bookmarks, history (also in the sidebar), and tabs. The browser has ad blocking enabled by default since it has the AdBlock plugin built-in.
The first version of QupZilla was released in December 2010 and was developed in Python with PyQt4 bindings. After a few releases, QupZilla was rewritten from scratch in C++ with the Qt Framework. The first public release was 1.0.0-b4.
Until version 2.0, QupZilla used QtWebKit. However, QtWebKit is no longer used and all new versions use QtWebEngine.
Since version 3.0, QupZilla has not been developed and the new version was released under the name Falkon by the KDE project.
So essentially Falkon browser and QupZilla are the same product, and the name change aims to improve impressions.
Once you use the browser, you will be surprised. As we mentioned before, it has Adblocking, spell check, is lightweight and very fast.
The Falkon browser was stable during my tests, did not display any errors, and generally worked fine.
However, as a new project, it does not have a track record of commitment from the development team to updates and security patches. I hope that with the browser being taken over by the KDE project, development will continue steadily.
It is worth a try.
