Notepad++ replacement for the classic Notepad

The new version of the Notepad++ text editor 7.5.9 brings a new feature to Windows that allows you to replace the default Windows text editor, Notepad.Notepad++ replacement for the classic Notepad

Notepad++ or Notepad PlusPlus is a powerful text editor that offers many more features compared to Windows Notepad, although Microsoft has recently added some new features to the default Notepad text editor in recent versions of Windows 10.

Let's see, however, the new version of Notepad++ that brings a new option. The replacement of the text editor is not fully automated, and must be performed from a command line window that you have opened with administrator rights.

Note: The following commands contain a specific path. You can copy and paste the commands directly if you have installed Notepad++ in the default location but you will need to edit the path if you have installed it somewhere else on your disk.

In Windows search, type cmd.exe, right-click cmd.exe and select “run as administrator”.
Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift together and select open cmd.exe.
Confirm UAC.

If you are using the 32 bit version of Notepad++ you should run the following command (copy paste into cmd.exe and press Enter):

reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\notepad.exe" /v "Debugger" /t REG_SZ /d "\"%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Notepad++\notepad++.exe\" -notepadStyleCmdline -z" /f

If you are using the 64 bit version of Notepad++ you should run the following command:

reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\notepad.exe" /v "Debugger" /t REG_SZ /d "\"%ProgramFiles%\Notepad++\notepad++.exe\" -notepadStyleCmdline -z" /f

After running the command you selected you will see the confirmation “the operation completed successfully”

The command will change the information in the Windows registry that makes Notepad the default text editor instead of Notepad++.

You can restore Notepad with the following command:

reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\notepad.exe" /v "Debugger" /f
